O'Grady is a native of Detroit, Michigan, the daughter of Jan and Jim O'Grady, a financial planner. The family was raised by her parents within Wheaton (Illinois) and she was a graduate of Wheaton's North High School. The model appeared in commercials for a while prior to moving to Los Angeles. O'Grady's early career was as model for Montgomery Ward model, where she also appeared in a variety of commercials. She played a role in the romantic comedy, She's Having a Baby and was later cast as a recurring character in ABC drama China Beach, opposite Dana Delany. In addition, she guest-starred on a number of other shows and was a part of made for films and television shows. Donna Abandando was her first big role on ABC's police thriller NYPD Blue. O'Grady's role as the tall, blonde secretary of the squad was played from 1993-96.
